Personal Identification Number (PIN) in Greece –Information for Foreign Nationals
What is the PIN?
Greece is introducing the Personal Identification Number (PIN / Προσωπικός Αριθμός – PA) as a single, unique number that will replace existing identifiers such as:
- Tax Identification Number (AFM)
- Social Security Number (AMKA)
- Other registry numbers used by public authorities
The goal is to simplify identification across all Greek public and private services.
- If you already have a Greek Tax Identification Number (AFM)
- Your AFM automatically becomes your PIN.
- The PIN will be the same number as your AFM.
- No separate application is required.
- If you do not yet have an AFM
- Once you apply for and receive an AFM (for employment, residence, property ownership, etc.), that number will also serve as your PIN.
- Use of the PIN
Over time, the PIN will be used for:
- Tax declarations and financial matters
- Social security and healthcare services
- Banking transactions
- Immigration and residence permit procedures
- Any other official dealings with Greek authorities
- Do you need to take action?
- No action is required if you already hold a Greek AFM.
- The transition is automatic and managed by the Greek authorities.
