Starting June 3rd, Greece is introducing the Personal Number (Προσωπικός Αριθμός)—a unique, lifelong identifier designed to streamline interactions with public services. This number aims to replace multiple existing identifiers, such as the Tax Identification Number (AFM), Social Security Number (AMKA), and others .

What Does This Mean for You (who are already in Greece)?

  • Simplified Processes: The Personal Number will serve as a single reference for various services, reducing the need to manage multiple IDs.
  • Eligibility: Individuals who already possess an AFM or AMKA, including foreign residents, are eligible to obtain the Personal Number .
  • How to Obtain: You can acquire your Personal Number through themyInfo application on gov.gr, using your Taxisnet credentials and a registered mobile number in the National Communication Registry (EMEp) .

For Newcomers to Greece:

If you’re new to Greece and do not yet have an AFM or AMKA:

  • Initial Steps: It’s advisable to first apply for an AFM and AMKA, as these are prerequisites for obtaining the Personal Number.
  • Support Available: Starting June 23rd, assistance will be available at Citizens’ Service Centers (KEP) and Consular Authorities for those without Taxisnet credentials or digital access .

Our Recommendation:

While the Personal Number is set to become the primary identifier, the transition will be gradual. For now:

  • New Residents: Continue to apply for AFM and AMKA as needed for employment, healthcare, and other services.
  • Existing Residents: Consider obtaining your Personal Number to benefit from streamlined services, but rest assured that existing identifiers remain valid during the transition period.

We’re eager to see how this new system unfolds and are here to assist you every step of the way. Feel free to reach out with any questions or for further guidance.
