For those of us working with Greek bureaucracy, this is big news! Greece has introduced the Personal Number(Προσωπικός Αριθμός), a long-anticipated step toward simplifying public administration.

Similar to the existing Tax Identification Number (ΑΦΜ) and Social Security Number (ΑΜΚΑ), the Personal Number will be a unique 12-character alphanumeric identifier assigned at birth. Going forward, it will be used for all interactions with public authorities, streamlining processes and enhancing security.

This long-overdue change is expected to improve efficiency, reduce administrative hurdles, and make life easier for both Greek citizens and foreign nationals navigating the system.

We’ll keep an eye on how this is implemented in practice—because as we all know, real change happens in the details!
